DESCRIPTION:WEC Annual Membership Meeting\nHow We Can Prepare Workers and Our Communities for Future Climate Disaster \nWEC Member and Non-Members are Invited to Attend \nScientists predict more extreme weather events fueled by climate change. What does this mean for a costal state like New Jersey that has a number of chemical facilities located in flood prone areas? \nKeynote Speaker: Matt Campo\, Rutgers University\nUsing Science\, Planning and Policy to Adapt to Future Flood Hazards \nMatt is a Senior Research Specialist in the Environmental Analysis and Communications Group at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Matt’s work at Rutgers focuses on understanding tools and methods to assess the sustainability and resilience of built environments and transportation systems. Matt provides analysis and support for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\, Mid-Atlantic Ocean Data Portal\, New Jersey Climate Adaptation Alliance\, and US Environmental Protection Agency to enhance planning capabilities and risk management strategies in coastal communities. Prior to Rutgers\, Matt worked for EY and TranSystems on the behalf of public agencies and private companies to create site location and economic development strategies for commercial\, residential and industrial real estate assets. He earned Bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech\, a Masters in City & Regional Planning from Rutgers and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Planning & Public Policy at Rutgers. \nThere will also be a panel discussion on the impacts of extreme weather on environmental justice communities and the workers who ultimately clean up toxic flood waters. We will also discuss general health issues caused by extreme weather from vector diseases to air pollution. \nThis event is FREE and open to WEC members and non-members. Pre-registration is required.

DESCRIPTION:Are you aware of the major changes to OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom) Standard and how it is now aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals? Employers have a responsibility under OSHA’s HazCom Standard to educate and train employees about the chemicals they work with and how to protect themselves from any potential hazards. \nJoin us for an interactive workshop as we discuss:\n• Assessing chemical hazards and understanding safety data sheets\n• OSHA’s HazCom standard\n• Identifying safety system failures \nWho Should Attend? Labor/Management health and safety committee members and professionals\, supervisors\, risk managers\, union representatives\, employers including small employers\, workers who work with chemicals\, workers in high hazard industries such as healthcare and chemical plants. \nPre-registration is required. This work led to Valorie being appointed as chair of the Environmental Justice Advisory Council to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection\, a position she held from 2002 to 2016\, and her co-founding of the NJ Environmental Justice Alliance\, NJEJA. \nLizette Delgado-Polanco & John Ballantyne  \nLizette Delgado-Polanco serves the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters as the Council Political Director. Delgado-Polanco\, a first-generation Hispanic American\, is an effective and compassionate advocate for the underrepresented\, particularly the working poor. In her previous capacity as Executive Director of the SEIU New Jersey State Council\, she worked on behalf of over 40\,000 working men and women whose lives\, families and livelihoods are affected by political\, economic and social issues in NJ. \nJohn Ballantyne currently serves as Executive Secretary-Treasurer (EST) for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC)\, as a Trustee on the Northeast Carpenters Funds\, the Carpenters Benefit Funds of Philadelphia & Vicinity\, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters Funds\, the Carpenters Local No. 491 Funds and the Carpenter Contractor Trust. John leads one of the largest trade unions on the East Coast\, comprised of nearly 40\,000 members throughout the states of Delaware and New Jersey and regions in Maryland\, New York and Pennsylvania. He oversees the NRCC’s business strategy\, critical financial planning as well as contract negotiations\, development of contractor relations and training and recruiting efforts to ensure that the organization can work cooperatively with contractors and maintain the superior quality of workmanship that contractors have come to expect from union carpenters. \nAssemblyman Tim Eustace is an American chiropractor and Democratic Party politician from Maywood\, New Jersey who is a member of the New Jersey General Assembly\, representing the 38th Legislative District since 2012. Currently serves as Chair of the Environment and Solid Waste committee\, Vice-Chair of Health and Senior Services and sits on the Commerce and Economic Development Committee. Assemblyman Eustace sponsored the Oil Train Safety Bill and continues to stand up for the Right to Know. \nKen Hoffner recently retired as the Assistant Director of the NJ Laborers’ Union Health and Safety Fund.  He provided consultative construction job site visits at the request of both contractors and Laborers union members\, assisting them in preventing on-the-job injuries and illnesses. Ken worked at the international office of the Laborers’ Health and Safety in Washington\, DC and for state OSHA programs in North Carolina and Maryland. Over his 37 year career in safety and health\, Ken focused on moving safety and health forward in a number of areas such as cotton dust\, blood borne pathogens\, lead in construction\, petrochemical plant process safety\, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis\, road construction work zone safety\, immigrant worker safety and health\, and silica. \nHetty Rosenstein is Area Director of New Jersey Communication Workers of America\, and helped initiate the New Jersey Resistance Movement. Hetty successfully helped lead a strike with partners at IBEW against Verizon\, in which workers beat back unreasonable demands for concessions from their employer. \nRead Full Bios\n  \nRising Star Award\nWEC is very pleased to honor two remarkable leaders with our Rising Star Award\, which is intended to recognize outstanding new leaders from labor\, environmental and community organizations.
