Job Opening at WEC: Organizer

The New Jersey Work Environment Council (WEC) is a coalition of labor, community, and environmental organizations advocating for safe, secure jobs and a healthy, sustainable environment.

WEC seeks a full-time, experienced campaign organizer. The person hired will be responsible for organizing, engaging, and expanding WEC’s coalition of partners, with a primary focus on our Healthy Schools Now initiative.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Working with the Executive Director and staff to develop, implement, and evaluate campaign strategies, timelines, messaging, and deliverables, while adjusting plans as priorities and circumstances change.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with a diverse coalition of labor, community, environmental, parent, and other partner organizations through one-on-one meetings, campaign planning, events, and presentations.
  • Leading grassroots and grasstops organizing efforts, including recruiting and developing volunteer leaders, mobilizing supporters, organizing petitions, letter-writing, direct actions, and other campaign activities.
  • Coordinating communications and public engagement efforts, including messaging, press conferences, media events, social media campaigns, and outreach to legislators and other public officials.
  • Developing and delivering training for parents, community stakeholders, and emerging leaders to build organizing capacity and strengthen campaign participation.
  • Collaborating with the Executive Director, staff, board members, and coalition partners to advance organizational priorities, campaigns, events, and strategic initiatives; proactively identifying challenges and developing solutions.
  • Managing multiple campaigns and projects simultaneously, tracking progress and metrics, maintaining databases and other organizational systems, and providing regular updates to the Executive Director, staff, and board.
  • Supporting fundraising and grant-related activities, including grant reporting and documentation.
  • Participating in staff meetings, campaign assessments, organizational events, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience Required:

At least two years of experience in grassroots, political, labor/union, community, or related organizing.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and proactively about progress, challenges, and changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to build coalitions, recruit and develop leaders, mobilize supporters, and advance campaigns from strategy through implementation and evaluation.
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and deadlines, and contribute effectively as part of a small team.
  • Flexible, solution-oriented approach to problem-solving, with the ability to adapt quickly, troubleshoot challenges, and maintain momentum in a changing environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car, with the ability to travel throughout the state for meetings, events, and conferences, sometimes on short notice and outside normal working hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Preferred:

  • College degree in political science, communications, education, or similar field of study.
  • Basic understanding of NJ government and the legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Experience engaging and managing volunteers.
  • Formal organizing training, such as by Midwest Academy, Center for Third World Organizing, etc.
  • Fundraising experience.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.

The ideal candidate is a person with high energy and enthusiasm, committed to social justice, who works well under pressure and understands that creating change isn’t always a 9-to-5 endeavor.

Additional Information:

Location and Travel — This position is primarily based at our Trenton office, with some flexibility for remote work depending on organizational and candidate needs. Regular travel within New Jersey, approximately 10–40% of the time, is required. WEC may require in-office work as business needs dictate.

Salary and Benefits — The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $72,000, commensurate with experience. WEC offers a competitive benefits package, covered by a collective bargaining agreement, including healthcare, 20 paid vacation days, sick time, 10 holidays plus a weeklong winter break, cell phone reimbursement, and more.
